Things I have built, and what they had to get right

Projects built and in use. The common thread is work that matters to somebody's day job: who receives the magazine, what a customer can order, what a consultant can publish herself.

Agricultural publisher

Farmers Guide reader platform

Live

The reader and circulation system behind a national farming magazine. A bespoke public survey, a review pipeline that cleans and validates reader data, and the admin application the circulation team works in every day.

  • A survey built from scratch that adapts to the reader’s responses, validating as it goes and converting units, so the same field is the same size whether it was entered in acres or hectares
  • Addresses are checked against a lookup as they are entered, so a copy posted to a reader actually arrives
  • Every submission is kept exactly as it arrived and checked automatically for the problems that come up most. Nothing reaches the reader database until an administrator has signed it off
  • Entitlement to each title is worked out from the answers themselves, so nobody needs to decide by hand
  • Readers whose details have aged past a set period are re-surveyed automatically
  • A credit system for paying subscribers, so they always receive the correct number of copies
  • The mailing list for an issue can only be generated once, and not until the previous issue has gone out, so nobody is sent two copies and nobody is missed
  • It talks to the systems the publisher already runs, so the reader database is not another island to reconcile
  • Admin screens for readers, subscriptions and the review queue, with access tiered so approving a record and reading one are different permissions

The reader records and the circulation team’s admin sit behind a login. The survey is public, but it is a sign-up form for the magazine, not something to look round.

Home bakery

Kaylees Kitchen Bakes

Live

An online shop for a home bakery selling bakes and hampers. A Shopify storefront with its own sections and templates built around her range, so it carries her branding and she can keep it current without a developer.

  • A bespoke hero that locks the logo into the slideshow, so the brand holds whatever photograph sits behind it
  • Markets and fairs come from a blog, so she posts an event herself and it appears on the homepage and on its own page
  • Dedicated templates for hampers, the story page and the FAQs, each laid out around what is actually on it
  • Three featured collections on the homepage she chooses herself, so whatever is in season is the first thing a visitor sees

PR consultancy

Puddle Dog PR

Live

A marketing site for a freelance PR and marketing consultant: the services she offers, the clients she has worked with, and a route for new business. Designed from her own branding and built so she can change any of it herself.

  • Her branding carried through every page, with each section designed and built for this site alone
  • Every section is hooked up to Prismic, so she adds a service, a client or a whole new block herself and it is live without me
  • The contact form runs through an email service, so an enquiry lands in her inbox the moment it is sent
  • Pages are built ahead of time and served ready, so the site is quick for someone who found her through a search

If one of those sounds close to what you need, I would like to hear about it.
