What I build

Most jobs land in one of these four areas, and some sit across more than one. You don’t need to work out which before you get in touch. That’s what the first conversation is for.

  1. 01

    Websites

Designed and built from scratch around your branding. Quick to load, easy to read on a phone, and yours to edit without coming back to me.

    • If you have brand guidelines I’ll work to them. If you don’t, we settle the basics first
    • A CMS so you can edit the text and images yourself
    • Hosting, domain and certificates arranged and looked after, with the domain registered in your name
    • Built so search engines can read and display it properly
  2. 02

    Online shops

Built with Shopify, with a theme built for you instead of one bought off the shelf. Set up around how you actually sell, and built to suit your budget.

    • Built on Shopify, so payments, security and PCI compliance are handled, and hosting is billed to you by them
    • Products, collections and variants set up around your range, including sizes, options and bundles
    • Payments, postage rules and discounts configured and tested before the first real order
    • You run it day to day: new products, price changes, sales. I’ll show you how, and loading a big catalogue yourself costs nothing but your time
    • No premium theme licence to renew each year

    Web applications

    Where I specialise

A system of your own, built around your data. User registration and login, data collection, processing and reporting. A bespoke application that does what you need, not what a generic platform allows. Mobile apps too, where the work happens away from a desk.

    • Accounts, logins and permissions, so people see only what their job needs
    • Data in from wherever it lives: forms, spreadsheet imports, another database, or an API from another system
    • Validated and processed as data arrives, so problems surface at the point of entry
    • Scheduled jobs and automatic email for the work nobody should be doing by hand
    • An admin screen built around the daily job, for the people doing it
    • Reporting you can run yourself, with the figures exportable
    • Hosted, backed up and monitored, with errors reaching me before they reach you

    Data processing

Making sense of data you already hold. Cleaning it up, joining systems that don’t talk, and turning the result into dashboards and reports people will use. Power BI where that suits, or built into your own system.

    • Getting data out of systems that have no export button
    • A review of data quality, the good, the bad, and how it can be improved
    • Reports that send themselves on a schedule
    • Power BI if your team already lives there, a dashboard of your own if not

Three ways to work together

Which one fits depends on how well defined the problem already is. If you are not sure, that's what the discovery option is for.

Fixed-price project

For work you can describe: a site, a shop, a system with a known shape.

  • One price agreed before anything starts, and it holds unless the scope changes
  • What gets built is yours, with a warranty period once it’s live
  • How most of the four areas above get built

Monthly retainer

For keeping something running once it’s live.

  • A set amount of my time each month for fixes, changes and small additions
  • Your work goes to the front of the queue
  • Usually follows a project of mine, so the system is one I already know

Discovery and data strategy

For when you know something’s wrong but not what to build.

  • A map of what you have, what it’s costing you, and what’s worth doing
  • The write-up is yours, including if you take it to somebody else
  • Most often where data work starts, though it suits any of the four

Not sure which of those you need?

That is a normal place to start. Describe what you want in whatever terms make sense to you, and I will tell you what shape of engagement fits it.
